Dan took a well deserved day off while I spent Saturday assisting the multi-talented Miguel Ramos with a wedding up in Houston.

Allison and Robert got married in Lake Jackson yesterday. Dan and I started the day with the girls at Bushwackers.

Allison has been keeping a daily journal for the past few months leading up to the wedding day. Here she is writing her last entry before she gives it to Robert as a surprise gift.

The happy couple did not see each other before the wedding but at least they could hold hands.

Nothing calms a ring bearer like Redbull.

Robert's microphone was mistakenly turned on before the ceremony so some of the guests got to hear some interesting conversations before he was told to turn it off.

Drew and Jennifer

Drew and Jennifer tied the knot yesterday in the Woodlands.

Drew had fun killing a little time while the girls got ready.

Good digital hygiene is important. Even if you have to do it while standing next to the hotel pool wearing nothing but a towel. :)

Shelby and Jeremy were married yesterday in a beautiful ceremony in Houston.

Dan and I started out the day at the beauty salon. I personally liked the intermediate Lion King look but Shelby decided to go with a more contemporary style for the alter.

Studio979 brides are neither dirty nor lying, I have no idea how that got into the picture :)

Jeremy is a fellow Canadian who likes cars, high tech gadgets, shoots a NikonD50 and wears Millennium Falcon cuff links. That's big time cool in my book!

I love a good bouquet fight!

Last Saturday Steve and I hung out with Laura Sue and Kevin during their beautiful ceremony in Brazoria followed by the reception in Lake Jackson. It was an awesome party and the love between Kevin and Laura is incredible.

We spent Sunday afternoon with Allison in The Woodlands for her bridals. The only thing hotter than the Texas sun was Allison in that wedding dress! She's going to make a beautiful bride and we had a bit of fun while shooting as well.

When shooting Allison's engagements, we were stopped by police who thought we were holding them hostage. Since we had cops on the last shoot, we thought a security guard would work for this one!

Periodic down pours did not put a damper on the day as David and Kristin were married yesterday at Hope Lutheran church.

We started the day with the girls at Valerie's Hair Salon for hair and makeup.

Nothing starts the day like OJ and champagne.

We then moved to the Bay Oaks Country Club where David sunk a few putts while waiting for the girls to finish getting ready.

Kristin looked beautiful walking down the aisle.

Back to the country club for the reception. These guys can dance!

It rained heavily earlier in the day but the clouds broke during the reception so we snuck away for a few fun pics around the grounds at the country club.

Extra points for form on the garter!

Aggies definately know how to party.

The happy couple escaped through a cascade of sparklers on the way to the honeymoon!

Watercraft and wet dogs

Steven and Stephanie were married yesterday at a beautiful yacht club on Lake Conroe. Much thanks go to videographer to the stars Rob at www.dontgetmarriedwithoutme.com for the hook up.

Stephanie wore tennis shoes to walk down the aisle. A perfect fit for her easy going personality.

Dixie was a perfectly behaved member of the wedding party.

After the reception everyone headed to a beach house for the after party.

The after party was a blast! Dan and I even took a jet ski for a ride. Wedding photography has it's perks!

Shelby's Bridals at the Courtyard on St. James

JEREMY... DON'T PEEK!!!

Steve and I shot Shelby's Bridals on Sunday afternoon at the Courtyard on St. James near the Houston Galleria and it couldn't have come out better. We started off shooting some inside stuff, then moved to this fantastic balcony and ended up with several stunning shots of Shelby and her gorgeous dress.

Shelby is such an awesome girl and if the wedding is anything like the bridal session, then we are in for a rockin time. Thanks to Shelby for letting us post a few before her June wedding. We'll be back at this spot again to kick it at her reception in a little more than a month.

Security guards and a sandy dog

Kristin and David got engaged at the water wall near the Galleria so they thought that would be a great place to start their engagement shoot. Unfortunately, Dan and I tend to attract law enforcement when we shoot engagement photos (click the link for an example). So sure enough, as soon as we started shooting, we were asked to leave by a security guard. Despite the fact that half the people at the place were taking photos, the security guard explained that because we were using "professional" cameras that our photography was against the rules. Apparently size does matter. :)

So we headed to the warehouse district where we got some urban style photos.

Until we were asked to leave by a security guard.

So we headed to the lawless frontier of Surfside beach.

We brought along their dog Duke who loves to give wet willies.

The surfers thought we were a little nuts for splashing around in the waves but I'll take the inquisitive stare of a surfer over getting chased off by Joe Law every time.

Dan and I photographed a beautiful young couple on a perfect sunny spring morning at the LDS Houston Temple yesterday.

We had a great time with Chris and Christine wandering the beautiful grounds of the Temple.

Nicole and Josh tied the knot yesterday here in Lake Jackson. Nicole works at my dentist's office so up to now I have associated her with pain and dept but I'm happy to say those memories are long past. Dan and I had a great time hanging out with their friends and family.

Josh recently underwent major back surgery but he was still able to dip Nicole into the most passionate kiss I have ever seen during a wedding ceremony.

Cold and rain did not put a damper on Scott and Lacey's Friday the 13th wedding at RiverPlace in Freeport. The family raced all day to move what was supposed to be an outside wedding into the building and they pulled it off beautifully.

Nothing is cuter than identical two year old flower girls!

The merging of unity sand punctuated a beautiful ceremony.

Scott is an avid golfer so as a surprise Lacey planned some cool shots at The Wilderness golf course as part of her bridal portraits.

Let the party begin! They did this really cool thing before he removed the garter. Scott had to dance up to Lacey and she could wave him off or give him the OK. She let him suffer for a few minutes but eventually gave the all clear to go in after the garter.

The happy couple is now lounging in Jamaica, feeling gentle ocean breezes and sipping tasty drinks. Congrats!!

Felonious Photography

Dan and I have shot a lot of young couples but we have never been accused of actually trying to "shoot" them before today. We were under a bridge, in the middle of Robert and Allison's engagement session when we found ourselves surrounded by police cars. It seems that someone thought that we were aiming a gun rather than a camera and called 911 on us. The cops were good about it once they were convinced that we were not kidnappers.

That's an engagement session I will not soon forget! Here are a few of my favorites of the day.

Juston and Christina were married at the Riverplace in Freeport last night. It was decorated beautifully with lights and large bouquets of flowers. Unfortunately Riverplace is not built for weddings so Christina ended up putting on her dress in the closet which is normally used to hold spare tables and chairs. :)

The stormy sky made a dramatic backdrop for the guys.

Juston & Christina left in a flury of glow sticks. Enjoy your honeymoon in January and the rest of your lives together.

Jessica and John tied the knot a few weeks ago in Angleton in a beautiful ceremony surrounded by friends and family. The best part of the day, besides the glowing bride, was the groom's cake; a delicious home made german chocolate cake made by John's grandmother. I was going to take a picture of it, but Steve and I ate it instead! Then the happy couple hopped aboard a cruise ship and lounged around the Caribbean for a week or so. Congrats you two!!

I had the opportunity to give Monique Montoya and Carolyn Jones a hand at a wedding yesterday. My job...follow the groom.

As a wedding photographer I either get to follow the bride or the groom. There are pros and cons to both. On one hand, there is the beauty of the bride, the dress and the little details of her day. From a photographic perspective this means lots of work and the stress of working fast and not missing a single shot. On the groom side things are much more laid back and there is usually beer involved. Photographically...low stress.

Matt and the guys were no exception. I had a great time hanging out with them and discussing how they were dealing with the wild hogs that had invaded their property. Only in Texas!

This little flower girl has a promising future in photography.

I love it when the bouquet toss ends in a brawl. ;)

The tables at the reception were decorated with little bird nests.

Lindsey and Matt were a fun couple to be around and they are very much in love. Good luck and thanks for letting me be part of your day.

Kansas City Rocks!

Dan and I had the opportunity to Join Chris and Angela for their wedding in Kansas City this weekend. They are an awesome couple and they definitely know how to throw a party! Angela's dress fit like a glove and they started the partying early and didn't stop until midnight, and I'm sure there was an after party somewhere that went on till the break of dawn!!

Angela and Chris rented a party limo to tour around Kansas City before the ceremony. Lots of champagne, beer and cheese nips.

The priest which performed the ceremony was a high school friend.

The couple is hanging out on the beach in South Padre Island for a while, feeling the hot Texas sun and enjoying their time together. Thanks, you two, for letting us be a part of your fantastic day.

Crissy and Jakob

Crissy and Jakob were scheduled to get married on September 12 at Heather's Glen in Conroe. That's right...just before hurricane Ike remodeled the Houston area. Crissy and Jakob prudently decided to move the wedding day up to the 11th but unfortunately Dan was stuck in Lake Jackson covering the hurricane for the local paper and I had already evacuated my family to Austin by that time.

Luckily Mike Fulton and the guys at Tricoast Photography had evacuated from Lake Jackson to stay with family in the Conroe area and were available to shoot the wedding at the last minute. Mike and the gang didn't have much equipment with them and no wedding appropriate attire (nothing a quick trip to Target can't solve) but they pulled it all together and covered the entire day. My thanks goes out to Tricoast for helping us out and capturing Crissy and Jakobs special day.

Life After Ike

Dan and I both and both our families fared well through Ike. Only minor damage to our houses. However, neither of us have power at the moment so I am publishing this post from my kid's computer hooked up to a generator. I won't turn on my main photo processing computer until we have stable clean power back at the house.

Dan and I took a trip down to Surfside beach this afternoon to check out the folks that were really hit by this storm. Some major damage down there. Some of the houses look fairly good but others were either fallen over or missing all together. Sobering.

We spoke to many of the local residents and I was happy to see that the storm has not crushed their spirits. They are working hard to clean up their town and bring life back to as close to normal as they can.

Evacuated!!

Hey! Steve and I were supposed to have two rockin' weddings this weekend, but Mother Nature had other plans. Our families have evacuated in advance of the possible arrival of Hurricane Ike and both weddings were postponed! Steve is safe and sound with his family, but I work in the media, so I have to stay and watch the storm roll in. I sent my family to higher ground and tomorrow I'll be one of those poor dudes you see on CNN boarding up his windows.

Who is Studio979?

There are very few pictures of Dan and I floating around. Let's face it we spend most of our time on the other side of the lens. Sometimes you will see a guy in the background of a shot, dressed in black and holding a very big camera...that's usually one of us. The only other time we show up in photos is when we are taking test shots for lighting or demonstrating a pose.

So I thought it's probably time we show our ugly mugs so that you know who your dealing with when you're talking to Studio979.

Lucy & Jaer

Steve and I spent all day Saturday with Lucy as she and Jaer tied the knot at the beautiful Crystal Ballroom at the Rice Hotel. Lucy met Jaer while they were in college at Indiana University. After Jaer moved home, Lucy got a job down near Houston to be closer to Jaer and they finally married with all thier friends and family together for the party.

Congrats to you guys and have fun in Key West! More pie, please!!

Shooting on MTV

I had the chance to assist good friend and fellow photographer Miguel Ramos at a quincenera this evening. I'm from Canada and far from an expert in Mexican culture but from what I understand a quincenera is a coming out party for a 15 year old girl.

Quinceneras are not just simple "sweet 16" parties. They are elaborate affairs on the scale of a wedding. This specific quincenera had a little extra added bonus as it was filmed by MTV and will be part of an upcoming show.

Here is the guest of honor, Dinora, with some of her attendants.

It wasn't until the reception till it became very evident that this was an "MTV production". I've never seen so many cameras in one place.

There was a very good mariachi band playing at the reception.

There was some beautiful traditional dancing...

Less traditional dancing as well. It's MTV after all...

So if you're watching MTV and you see Dinora's quincenera look for the guy dressed in black with the big Nikon around his neck. That's my 5 seconds of fame. ;)

Meredith and Brad got married Saturday in Lake Jackson and followed up their beautiful ceremony with a rockin' reception. Just spending a few moments with this couple makes you realize the power of love. We had Holly from Teneophoto lending a hand for this one and Jenny from jhintze was hanging around as well.

Dan and I have a few weeks off from weddings so we are keeping busy by trying out a new album company and new design software. We've had lots of beautiful couples to choose from this year but we selected Donnie and Alison's wedding for our sample book. They are a beautiful couple and very much in love.

The first and last images are single 10" x 10" pages and the images in between are double pages with a fold in the middle.

Stacy and JD tied the knot last night. They are a funny, energetic couple and just plane fun to be around.

OK, this isn't the most flattering shot but it's not often you see a bride in pigtails...

It was a beautiful ceremony, lots of emotion. Very few dry eyes in the church.

JD's ring used to belong to his grandfather who lost it. JD found it while digging in the garden 30 years later.

During the reception, Stacy and JD braved the Texas summer heat for a few shots outside as the sun set.

Stacy seems to attract fire ants and poison ivy but JD carried her to safety

During the reception, Stacy made sure the bouquet hit the target.

Towards the end, the village people showed up. YMCA never sounded so good.

Thank to Monique Montoya for shooting with us on this wedding. Monique is a very talented photographer and I look forward to shooting with her more in the furture.

Leslie and Chris

Leslie and Chris got married this past weekend in a beautiful ceremony followed up by a super fun and totally relaxing outdoor reception at the Lake Jackson Civic Center. We had a blast hanging out with the happy couple, who are at this very moment basking on a beach in the Dominican Republic. Take a look at some of the highlights from Saturday:

Leslie's dress was gorgeous, complete with custom made details hand stiched by a local seamstress. So many people complimented her on it and it was truly one of the most beautiful dresses I have seen.

Leslie's sister offered up a prayer before the wedding that had everyone in tears.

The ceremony was at Leslie's home church, Chapelwood UMC in Lake Jackson.

The couple has a moment together before heading to the reception.

Dinner and dancing were outside at the Lake Jackson Civic Center. For this shot I got on the roof of the building to catch the whole scene. It helps to have friends in high places!

The love between this couple is so genuine and was visible on their faces for the entire day. During their first dance, Chris swept Leslie off of her feet!

Check out the cake! It came from Cakes by Nina and featured the name of every one at the wedding and the guests had a blast searching for their names before devouring every morsel!

We shot John and Jessica's engagement session this week and had a blast. They are such a great couple and so much in love it was a great way to spend the day. Despite the 95 degree heat, they managed to keep smiles on and even sneak in a kiss every now and then. I'm definitely looking forward to their October wedding. Jessica is going to be a stunning bride, and I bet John looks pretty good a tux as well.

This past weekend Dan photographed Tracy who is getting ready to head off to Texas A&M in the fall. Tracy had already done her cap and gown pictures and wanted something a little fun and different. Destination: Santa Fe

Steve and I flew to Santa Fe this weekend for a beautiful wedding at the St. Francis Basilica. It was incredible. We shot more photos than should be allowed by law, but here are a few that caught our eye during the initial edit:

After the ceremony, we hit the streets of Santa Fe for some fun stuff around town. It felt like -30 degrees outside so we didn't last long, but the wedding party shivered long enough for a few pics.

Then the bride and groom got a little hot by the fire.
The reception was a blast. The party was rocking so hard, they paid the DJ to stay an extra four hours and everyone, and I do mean EVERYONE, had too much fun.

The after party kicked off with a dip in the pool. Who needs a bathing suit when you have a perfectly good tuxedo?

Mark and Kristin tied the knot this weekend and then had the reception at the Lake Jackson Civic Center. A beautiful young couple, very much in love, they had the day planned with no detail left out. Steve and I made some really cool shots of many of those details, plus the joy of their big day. The best thing about photographing Mark and Kristin was their obvious love for each other that came through in every shot.

Before coming together to form Studio979 we both had our own separate photography businesses, each with its distinctive style, one more photojournalistic and the other more formal. The combination of the two styles provides the best of both worlds by allowing us to deliver a photography package with both depth and dimension.

It doesn’t matter if we are shooting a wedding, bridal portrait or engagement session. We get a thrill from capturing life’s special moments in a memorable and artistic way. Steve is a trained research chemist and holds a masters of Science from a top ranked Canadian university. As a scientist, Steve is challenged with finding answers to nature's mysteries. Steve approaches photography as a scientific problem. Capturing the beauty that exists in everyone and everything is simply another mystery to solve.

Trash The Dress!!!

Earlier this summer I went down to the beach with Lauren and Marie and had a Trash the Dress session. We had a blast splashing in waves and getting funny looks from the fishermen along the pier.
